For the first time, a competition saw hackers break into a US Air Force satellite in orbit. It was part of an annual event held to stress-test the satellites against real security threats. This winners, the Italian team mHACKeroni, took home $50,000. For the first time, the hackers were asked to attack a real satellite in space — the US Air Force Moonlighter, which was deployed specifically for the event. Italian team mHACKeroni won the US Air Force's fourth annual Hack-A-Sat competition by hacking into a satellite in space.

The National Guard says it's struggling to hire as big private companies boost pay and benefits. Maj. Marco Irenze said, per a press release by the National Guard Association of the United States last month. Across all private nonfarm jobs, workers in production and nonsupervisory roles earned $28.75 an hour in May on average, per preliminary seasonally-adjusted BLS data. "This is the most challenging recruiting environment the Department of Defense has probably ever faced," Col. Anthony Pasquale, the chief of the Air Guard's recruiting & retention division, said, per the press release. As well as high wages in other industries luring workers away from the military, the pandemic also made it harder for the National Guard to recruit in traditional ways such as at high schools, the National Guard Association said.

WASHINGTON, April 19 (Reuters) - A 21-year-old member of the U.S. Air National Guard who is facing criminal charges for leaking top-secret military intelligence records online will remain in jail for now, according to court filings. It remains to be seen whether Teixeira will opt to challenge the government's detention request or not. Teixeira appeared very briefly in court on Wednesday, wearing an orange jumpsuit, where the judge accepted his request to waive his right to a preliminary hearing. WASHINGTON—Investigators believe the leak of purported highly classified documents on Ukraine and dozens of other subjects likely originated from an Air National Guardsman who was based at Fort Bragg at the time of the leak, U.S. officials said, and an arrest could be made as early as Thursday.

Jack Teixeira, a 21-year-old Massachusetts Air National Guardsman, has been arrested in connection with a leak of purported highly classified documents on Ukraine and dozens of other subjects that has exposed the challenges of safeguarding sensitive U.S. information and tested ties with some of America’s closest allies. Federal agents took Mr. Teixeira into custody at his home in Dighton, Mass., on Thursday afternoon. Television footage showed armed personnel leading a male with red shorts and green shirt with his hands cuffed behind his back.
